Richard Vincent Van Patten is an American actor, comedian, businessman and animal rights activist with a career spanning seven decades in television. He is best known for his role as Patriarch Tom Bradford in the comedy - ABC television series Eight Is Enough. Van Patten started out as a child actor and found success on the New York scene, appearing in more than a dozen plays as a teenager. He works on the radio at Duffy's Tavern. He went on to star in many television roles, including the CBS TV series "Mama" and Young Doctor Malone. He later starred or co-starred in several feature films, including Charly, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Spaceballs by Mel Brooks, and Soylent Green by Charlton Heston. Van Patten is the founder of Natural Balance Pet Foods and National Guide Dog Month.
