SAN DIEGO—The Pirates won the first draft lottery in MLB history on Tuesday night and will have the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.
The Pirates finished with the third-worst record in the majors last year. The Nationals, who finished with the worst record, received the No. 2 overall pick.
The Nationals, Athletics and Pirates all had a 16.5% chance of receiving the first overall pick, the highest odds of any team. The A’s, who had the second-worst record in MLB, fell to the the sixth pick in the lottery.
The way the draft order is determined changed for playoff teams as well. As opposed to teams drafting strictly in reverse order of the previous year’s standings, they now are ordered by a system combining the previous year’s standings, their postseason finish and revenue sharing status.
